Lorna Duffy (Fashion Boss) is driven. Hell, this woman has girl boss written all over her. She epitomises the modern millenial – she has multi-tasking down to a fine art, manages to achieve a work/life balance and fit in styling stints on TV and of course, blogging. She has a kind of unstoppable energy that you can sense she is always ‘on,’ always working on the next project, thinking about the next thing. Interestingly enough, like Holly White, she strikes me as an extroverted introvert. Maybe that’s because I don’t know her too well but she seems to ooze confidence in a quiet way.
When I met up with Lorna to do photos, I couldn’t believe how good she was at modelling. Most bloggers present as an alternative to models – they don’t fit the specifics of models (height, bone structure, weight etc.) and they often present a more conventional aesthetic. Whereas in the modelling world, it might be preferable to have a shaved head, a prominent nose and unusual features, the blogging world is less restrictive. Anyone with a computer or a phone can have a blog. There does appear to be an over-saturation of beauty/lifestyle/fashion bloggers at the moment but Lorna Duffy tells me that there is room for everyone.
“We have a lot of great bloggers in Ireland and they are producing high quality content in a wide range of areas which is brilliant. I see blogs as online diaries so in my opinion there is definitely room for everyone. I am a firm believer in #GirlPower. Women supporting other women is important because great things can result from it. In my opinion, a successful woman will empower another. “
And Lorna seems to practice this championing of women in her personal and professional life. She often takes photos for friends’ blogs and vice versa. There’s is a real sense of camaraderie with her girl gang and talk about squad goals. Lorna Duffy is often pictured at events with her bestie Mei Ling Tong of Darling Buds of Mei, Kassiani Cher of Just Kassi, Nirina Plunkett of Killer Fashion and Filomena Kaguako of Enhance What’s Yours– a squad that opens its arms to other bloggers, as I have experienced first hand whilst attending events alone. Although Lorna is a champion of the women she surrounds herself with, she feels it is detrimental to compare oneself with others.
“It’s important to be yourself and to be consistent,” she says and not to compare yourself or your blog to others. “You need to find out what works for you, be yourself and just do what you love to do.”
It is this ethos that drives Lorna as she tailors her content according to her readership.
” I regularly ask my readers what type of content they would like me to focus on next – style tips, street style looks, beauty reviews etc. I post content on a weekly basis and like to mix up the type of content I post from time to time.’
In terms of her inspiration, she likes to watch travel and DIY home videos, citing Retro Flame, AKA Erika Fox as one of her favourites. She also loves The Londoner, Chiara Ferragni, Lydia Millen and Irish supers Pippa and Anouska. Having completed an MSc in digital marketing just last year, Lorna Duffy is absolutely nailing the fashion blogging market with over 14K followers on Instagram and counting. Her style is very shoppable, she has a classic look with crisp silhouettes and monochromatic colours. Fave designers? It’s tricky, she tells me but up there in the top five are Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, Oscar De La Renta and Vera Wang. She also loves supporting Irish designers and mentions Chupi, Jennifer Wrynne, Emma Manley and Zoe Jordan as her go-to RTW and accessory labels.
